Janice Brown BSc, RRT, RYT
Janice is the co-founder of The Strength Within and the founder of Yoga Moments. She studied Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, Respiratory Therapy at Conestoga College and completed her yoga teacher training at Yandara Yoga Institute. Her formal education led her to understand the human body and its ability to move and heal. Her personal background led her to understand the principles of successful change and the infinite ability of individual human potential. She has always seen people as anything they want to be. Through her own growth and challenges, she is able to mentor people as they become the person they want to be. By working with individuals and groups, she shows people how to use their awareness and focus to bridge that gap with fun and ease. If she can help everyone in the world love themselves just a little more, then the world will be a very magical place. Amongst all of this, she continues to work as a respiratory therapist in critical care and spends her free time with friends, in nature or enjoying live theatre and comedy.
What is the most difficult change you’ve ever made?
To love myself and actually value myself without judgement. I (slowly) learned to prioritize myself and to find my voice. All of those things are connected so it was a huge change and something I’m always checking in with. Though I will say it gets a lot more fun with practice!
What’s the toughest thing you’ve had to admit to yourself?
That I wasn’t strong enough to leave an awful relationship. I had lost my sense of self, didn’t love myself and was having dreams where I was blind and mute. It took my partner cheating on me before I was able to end it. Admitting that I couldn't leave and needed him to cheat was awful and a bit nauseating but it opened the doors for me to finally befriend myself again.
What emotions do you find the most challenging?
I find it most challenging when I feel I’ve let myself down. It sucks because I feel angry, hurt and somehow helpless...but at the same time, I’ve explored my emotions enough to also feel grateful for the clarity of what’s going on at the same time. Then I’m feeling opposite things at the same time which is somewhat overwhelming.
Hahaha! I always introduce Kayla as Donna from Suits! She’s not a redhead but she is always on top of things and more importantly, she makes everyone around her better! She is the sweetest, kindest person and you just know everything is going to work out perfectly when she’s around. What I love most about Kayla is she always listens and she never judges. She always leads with compassion and understanding. I don’t know how she does it but she always manages to show me a perspective that I haven’t seen before and then encourages me to understand it more deeply. With Kayla, there is no right or wrong. There is only where you are right now and a better version of yourself that she already believes in.
I love every season but winter is my favourite.
When asked by a friend if I meditated, I laughed it off with “Yeah, I’ve tried it. It’s not for me”. That was five years ago. I now meditate daily.
Huge lover of stories, plays and musicals. My favourite play was seeing Once in Dublin, Ireland and my favourite book is WarBreaker by Brandon Sanderson.
If I can’t have fun doing something, I’m probably not going to do it.
I have had so many things work out how I thought they would and many more things not go as planned. What I have learned is that the universe (or your chosen faith) always has your back and you are always exactly where you’re meant to be. Even if it’s Sweden. (Ask me about this any time you wish.)
